Yet, despite these touchstones, this is undoubtedly a Matt Reeves film. Here’s what he did with his gripping entries in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise: He created an electrifying, gripping scene, but it had real emotional stakes. It’s a Batman movie, aware of its place in pop culture but engaging, not in a meta fashion; Instead, it accepts the story of a comic book character, only to examine it and reproduce it substantially and boldly. Reeves and Peter Craig’s script forces this hero to question his history as well as confront his purpose and, in doing so, are a start for us as audiences to challenge those stories. Which we cling to in our lives.
